Legislation
By July 1, 2000, requires each hospital with obstetrical services to screen all newborns for hearing loss prior to discharge. Auditory brain stem response, otoacoustic emissions, or another appropriate test specified for screening. Other details of the program to be determined by the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene with advice from an Advisory Council. Program to include a system for gathering and maintaining data; methods to inform parents and primary care providers of screening results; and a telephone hot line for information and services. Requires managed care organizations and health insurance carriers to cover screening on and after July 1, 2000.
