Legislation
Requires all hospitals performing deliveries to conduct hearing screening of all newborn infants by December 31, 2002, unless parent objects on religious grounds. Department of Public Health required to maintain a registry of children with positive screening results reported to them by the hospitals. Department of Human Services to organize a hearing advisory committee by July 1, 2000, for training hospitals to implement programs; developing systems for tracking, follow-up diagnosis, and referral for early intervention and hearing aids; developing educational materials; monitoring third party reimbursement for universal screening; developing an application process for financial assistance from the Division of Specialized Care for Children for follow-up diagnostic hearing testing; and recommending rules to implement the law.

From the University Affiliated Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago: The Family Clinic provides family-focused comprehensive assessment services for children at risk who live in some of Chicago's most economically challenged areas. The Family Clinic is composed of professionals from audiology, education, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, social work, and speech/language. The clinic's medical staff have specializations in developmental pediatrics, psychiatry, and otolaryngology.
