Legislation
As of January 1, 2001, requires each hospital and maternity center to screen all newborns for hearing loss prior to discharge. Screening to consist of auditory brain stem response, otoacoustic emissions, or other means approved by the Department of Health. Parents to be informed of results and recommendations for follow-up testing and any treatment prior to the newborn's discharge. Mandates reimbursement for screening by all health insurers, hospitals, medical service corporations, and health maintenance organizations.
