Legislation
Requires all acute care hospitals that are approved for California Children's Services funding (70% of the state's live births) to offer a hearing screening test to all children born there. Screening to use procedures approved by the Department of Health. Establishes a system of early hearing detection and intervention centers to assist hospitals, maintain a database, and ensure appropriate follow-up. Requires parents of children diagnosed with hearing loss be given information about community resources and services and requires the Department of Health to conduct community outreach. Requires hospitals and providers of audiological diagnosis and follow-up to provide data to a state reporting and tracking system.
